A 15,000-gallon pool used mainly on warm afternoons has very different heating needs than a 15,000-gallon pool that the family wants ready for early-morning swims in April. Wind exposure, nighttime temperatures, shade, and whether the pool is covered can change the recommendation significantly.

For Ohio homeowners who want to stretch the swim season, it is often better to size for spring and fall conditions rather than for the hottest week of July. A heater that keeps up when evenings are cool will be far more satisfying than one that only performs well during peak summer weather.

Start by finding your pool's gallons

Your pool volume is the foundation of heater sizing. If you do not have it listed in your pool paperwork, you can estimate it with a simple calculation. Multiply the average depth by the pool's surface dimensions, then convert cubic feet to gallons.

For rectangular pools, multiply length by width by average depth, then multiply that number by 7.5. For round pools, multiply the diameter by the diameter, then multiply by average depth and 5.9. Oval and kidney-shaped pools can be estimated with formulas based on their widest and longest points, but a pool professional can help verify the number.

Use the average depth, not the deepest point. For example, a pool that slopes from 3 feet to 6 feet has an average depth of roughly 4.5 feet. An accurate gallon estimate leads to a more accurate heater recommendation.

Think about your desired temperature rise

The trade-off is operating cost. A larger gas heater burns more fuel per hour, but it may run for fewer total hours to bring water to temperature. The best choice depends on local fuel availability, gas line capacity, usage habits, and the heater's efficiency rating.

Heat pump pool heaters

A heat pump draws warmth from the surrounding air and transfers it to the pool water. These units are usually described by BTU output and efficiency rather than fuel consumption. They are often economical for maintaining a steady pool temperature during warm weather, but they heat more slowly than gas models and become less effective as outdoor temperatures fall.
